Road Traffic Accident
Two cars collide whilst travelling in opposite directions, and both suffer extensive damage. One of the cars left characteristic ABS skid marks, left the road and struck the front of a house. The frequency of the skid marks was measured close to the end of the skidding event, and glass was recovered from the front of the house atop the window heads, thus assisting in determing the airborne trajectory of the car.

By considering the analysis of the skid mark, the position of the glass on the house front, and indeed wheel imprints on the house front, we can make several calculations for speed estimation and consider the correlation between the various answers.

The more pieces of evidence that can be used to determine pre-collision speed the better. There will be a variety in the answers determined, and it is then a matter of making a reasoned guesstimate as to the likely speed range. It is never possible to state a pre-collision speed precisely, unless one has the benefit of insturmented technology on-board the vehicle such as a tachograph for example.
